Puppy Raisers

joshTaebo.jpg (13661 bytes) Raising a puppy for CCI is a major commitment.  It’s much more than sharing your home with a puppy for 16-18 months.  It requires an investment of time, patience, and love on a 24/7 basis.

A puppy raiser receives the puppy when it is about eight weeks old and is responsible for giving the puppy a loving home, basic obedience training, and, most importantly, socializing the dog to many different environments and experiences in public places.

kadin.jpg (9023 bytes) A puppy raiser must make a commitment to raise the puppy according to CCI’s guidelines for raising a dog that is confident, adaptable, well behaved, and in good health when it is returned to CCI.  The puppy raiser must also submit monthly reports to CCI on the puppy’s progress and is responsible for the puppy’s food, routine veterinary care, crate, bed, grooming supplies, etc.

The South Bay has two CCI contract trainers here who conduct free local CCI puppy classes. There is a large population of other CCI people here, who are available to assist with fostering when a puppy raiser must travel and can’t take the dog, or during a temporary illness such as recuperation from surgery.

kadin.jpg (9023 bytes) A comment frequently heard from people is, “Oh, I could never raise a puppy and give it back.” A puppy raiser will definitely fall in love with the puppy and will bond to this dog more closely than a pet dog because so much time is spent with it, and so many experiences are shared with it.  In accepting the responsibility of raising a puppy, the puppy raiser must understand that his/her success means making a gift of love to a someone who needs the dog, not just loves it. To realize that your puppy is improving the quality of life for another human being is the ultimate reward.   It’s such a great feeling, that many puppy raisers do it over and over and over again.
