South Bay Chapter is looking for lots of volunteers. Sunset Magazine will donate $2,500 to CCI in exchange for our providing volunteers to be docents at their Smart Home Exhibit in Palo Alto. The Smart Homes were designed by Sunset Magazine and will be featured in a future issue. These homes are programmed to be efficient in a variety of ways. The public will have to pay $18 to see these homes but our volunteers would get to see them free. The townhomes are located in downtown Palo Alto and are adjacent. We need 8 volunteers per shift, four for each house. Two will sell tickets at the door, and there will be one docent on each of three floors to monitor the foot traffic and to point out the features on that floor. Docents will be given written scripts of what to say. It won't be a lot or very detailed. There will be vendor reps there to answer technical questions about equipment. The area for each floor is only 500 sq feet so don't worry about doing a lot of walking. You can do this sitting down. The total size of each unit is only 1500 square feet but each docent is only responsible for one floor. In addition to the $2,500 Sunset is including Canine Companions for Independence in their Celebration Weekend next June. We were there at this weekend event this past June and Sunset gave us a free 20' x 20' booth. We had a lot of CCI dogs there and we spoke to a few thousand people. It was great exposure for CCI. Sunset wants to involve us even more in this event next year. The dates for the Sunset Smart Homes are Friday, Saturday, or Sunday from October 21st to November 13th. There are two shifts per day, either 9:30 - 1:30 or 1:30 -5:30. Volunteers only need to volunteer for one shift but we will gladly accept more than one shift. Interested persons should contact our info line at 408 257-6860.
